Physical Activity Hub

Physical activity can improve the quality of life of people living with advanced breast cancer. But patients and their medical teams are often unsure what kind of exercise – and how much – is beneficial and safe. Recent research has answered those questions: regular exercise is now recommended for most people with ABC, to help reduce fatigue and improve physical functioning and overall wellbeing.

What kind of activity? Our Physical Activity Hub can help you get moving safely, with resources reviewed by our expert working group of medical oncologists, physiotherapists, researchers and patients. You’ll find information about the benefits of physical activity in ABC, and links to all kinds of evidence-based exercises.

Exercise is most effective and safe under the supervision of a qualified exercise professional, who can tailor a programme to each person’s abilities and medical situation – but you’ll also find good advice about how to get started at home. Healthcare and exercise professionals will find information to encourage patients to stay active safely.

How much exercise? While some people might be ready for aerobic exercise and strength training, for others, even small amounts of movement can start to make a meaningful difference. You’ll find guidance for how to get started where you are right now – even if you’re stuck in bed – and how to build up safely.

Together, we can ensure that every person with advanced breast cancer has access to the information and support they need to make physical activity part of their daily life.

Note: You can filter your search by specific metastatic sites and symptoms. Other exercises may also be suitable for these sites and symptoms – but please check with your medical team before starting a new activity.

Use filters to search for the information you need, or see our recommended content for patients and healthcare providers.

For patients / caregivers – IMPORTANT:

Content on this site is provided as an information resource and is not to be used or relied on as personal recommendations for safe physical activity in ABC. For concerns about specific metastatic sites or symptoms, use filters to identify those that experts have deemed generally suitable. However, always seek the guidance of your doctor and/or other qualified health or exercise professional when starting a new activity or programme. Medical or exercise information provided does not create any patient-physician relationship and should not be used as a substitute for professional consultation. ABC Global Alliance has not reviewed or endorsed detailed information about any clinical trials or exercise programmes mentioned in documents or links found on this site – please consult your clinical team to understand if an activity is suitable for you. Exercise guidelines accessed via this hub may be of interest to patients, but please note that many were created for use by exercise or healthcare professionals; physical activity in ABC should be personalised for the patient.

For exercise and healthcare professionals (HCP):

This site contains links to resources suitable for sharing with and informing patients about physical activity in advanced breast cancer. In addition, the site offers links to exercise guidelines and research results suitable for both specialists and non-breast cancer specialists who would like to be more informed about physical activity in metastatic cancer. This is not intended to be comprehensive and may not include the latest publications in the field. Please consult your usual clinical sources for complementary information to be applied in clinical practice.
