ABC Global Alliance and the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) are partnering in a new annual Nurse Fellowship programme, starting in 2026.
The Fellowship offers breast cancer nurses with at least two years of clinical cancer nursing experience, but who have limited opportunities for professional development (usually from low- and middle-income countries), the chance to gain experience working in a multidisciplinary team in an accredited cancer centre for one to three months.
The fellowship is intended to increase the nurse’s knowledge of treatment and models of care for advanced breast cancer (ABC). It provides a level of professional development not otherwise available, and gives the nurse an overview of what’s involved in running a successful cancer unit. It may also provide an opportunity for a nurse to advance their quality improvement or research skills.
The fellowship is observational only, meaning the nurse may observe but not participate in patient care or management. Nurses will have the opportunity to experience multiple aspects of a comprehensive breast cancer service, for example:
We expect the fellowship to benefit not only the nurse, but also their home institution, as learnings are shared and opportunities for incremental improvements identified as a result of the fellowship. Ultimately, through these individual and institutional gains, the fellowship will improve the quality and consistency of metastatic breast cancer care in the Fellow’s home country.
ABC Global Alliance will provide a living allowance to the nurse for the duration of the fellowship, and will consider funding travel and accommodation in cases of need.
Host Institutions provide the foundation for a successful fellowship programme by generously sharing their expertise with the visiting nurse fellow. Host Institutions are centres of excellence – comprehensive cancer centres or accredited centres with recognised expertise in treating and supporting patients with advanced breast cancer.
Can your institution help by hosting a nurse fellow?

Nurse Carcelina Magule Cumba from Mozambique was granted a Fellowship at Champalimaud Clinical Center, Lisbon, Portugal. Now the head nurse in the new Breast Unit at Hospital Central de Maputo, here’s what she said about her fellowship experience (translated from Portuguese):
“It is important to emphasize here the importance of fellowships in our professional lives, as well as the role of nurses in each patient's life, given that this work performed by nurses is crucial to the patient's well-being…[Since my return from Champalimaud,] I am implementing preoperative and postoperative preparation techniques, as well as counselling on how to deal with an advanced breast cancer diagnosis and the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. I learned more than I expected to learn, and for that, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity.”
